Tarot weirdness

When I got home last night my wife informed me that she had picked up a tarot deck for me – at the dollar store! (Because she wanted to see what kind of crap deck they would carry, basically… :)

I opened it, somewhat trepidatiously, and was rather surprised to find that it actually did not entirely suck! Sure, there are some problems with it – the strangest being that are only 7 pip cards in each suit, 1-7… but there is *also* an Ace in each suit, in addition to the usual court cards. (see below)

Additionally, some of the art – especially the Death and Devil cards – looks like tattoo parlor flash… but overall the art has a vibrant, *alive* quality that is significantly absent from an awful lot of decks in the $20-and-up price range, and the best cards (in particular Strength and The Fool) are actually pretty darn good for what they are.

I’d never try reading with this deck, but it’s going into the collection, even if primarily as a curiosity. If you want to see it for yourself, the Wheel of Fortune card (pictured below) is on the cover of the box… you never know, your local dollar store might have it!

Dang! I rather like it. Which dollar store was it?

  2. Nice! I won’t be surprised if someone comes out with an actual “Dollar Store Tarot” deck now!

Well, after the various Redneck Tarot stuff out there, it’s the next logical step… (note that you have to scroll partway down the page on the second link to see the doc…)

My husband picked up that exact deck a few days ago for our daughter. I was also quite surprised to see that it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. The art is quite refreshing, but, like you, I probably won’t do any readings with it, since it is a little too mixed up for my tastes.

    Hi Siouxzie,
I don’t actually read tarot myself, I just collect them for the art! :)
The best resource I know to get started learning is the online course at http://learntarot.com… best of luck, and thanks for reading!
